Lately I have been thinking a lot about the reason we are in business. It is important for the owner or CEO of a company to do this often, especially in a small business.
I don’t think many of us would have too much trouble coming to the conclusion that our country is in a pretty bad spot. If a company was in the kind of debt the country was in we wouldn’t exist anymore. It is just not financially responsible. You won’t find me blaming anyone except everyone on how we arrived at this point.
We have all been enjoying the good life and just sat back and allowed our employees we hired to run the country to have freedom to do whatever they wanted and to be driven by the voice of the few and not the many. Most of us, including myself, have been just thinking, “my life is fine let them do whatever they want”.
Well that just isn’t going to cut it anymore. We need to wake up and get involved. Anyone who knows me or has read any of the things I have written will know by now I believe service to others is a very important part of life. In my life to this point I have realized what some never realize in a lifetime. When you focus on serving others you don’t have to worry about yourself.
Recently, I came to a realization as I was praying about what I needed to do to keep my employees working. As I have said before I believe everything we have from talents to money is given to us to bless the lives of others. I also believe the Lord has set up a system so that when we do use our blessings in this way we are blessed in ways that allow us to continue blessing others in similar and even bigger ways.
Laying off the employees in an attempt to save the business just seemed wrong. I assume it would to anyone who believed the businesses very existence was to bless the lives of the employees. It’s sort of like a mechanic taking on less cars just to make sure his tools stay nice. Our business is the tool to bless the lives of the employees and the community.
As I was praying about what to do the answer was simple. Put the employees back to work. Well, I can’t just give them something for nothing. That creates a dependence that I didn’t want nor could I afford. My question then to the Lord was, “what do I have them do?” Well once again the answer was simple. Put them to work in the community.
So we are all back to work now. When we don’t have work here in the shop to do my people have all agreed to go out and work for the community in whatever ways they need. We pay them to do it. It is really a win-win-win. My people are working, they are not collecting unemployment which increases the debt, and the community gets the work they need done.
I’ll keep this site updated on how it is going but for now everyone is very positive about the idea. So much so we plan to continue pledging 4 hours a week per employee to allow them to go out and work in the community at whatever community service project they want.
If you are thinking one person can’t change a country. Don’t worry about that just take care of the stewardship the Lord has given you and tell everyone how important that we each to the same. It will be very interesting how it will grow and grow and grow until one day we realize that we have really changed the world.
