Q: What kind of work are we allowed to do?

When speaking of type of work we have to stay within the guidelines our insurance providers set.  Workman’s comp for example.  We want to make sure no employee is doing something they are not physically able to do.  Most of the time the agencies will help us with this but we will monitor it as well.  I don’t think we will have anyone out cutting down trees for firewood.  However, stacking it isn’t outside the job description of some of the employees here.

When speaking of who they can work for, I feel it should be for the benefit of the community however, this can be open to interpretation, so I told them to bring examples to me and we will decide.  Working for the food bank is a no brainer “yes”.  Working for another business in town for free most likely will be a “no”.  Helping an individual that can’t do things around the home for some reason is a “yes” or maybe giving them a ride somewhere when they have no car or can’t drive would be a “yes”.

We want this program to be around for the long term.  We have weekly meetings to make sure everything is going well and we are moving in the right direction.  Sharing our experiences really keeps the excitment alive.

Q:What happens when we have a full workload?

Idaho Sewing for Sports, Inc. is committing to allow 4 hours per week per employee to do community service.  Basically we are changing the way we give back to the community.  We want it to become part of the culture.  Not to mention that we know Heavenly Father will bless us with the resources we need to be able to do this service.  It would not be grateful to stop serving just because we got busy.  We will just find a way to use Lean Manufacturing to create the time we need or hire more employees as the need increases.

Community Service Project (Question)

I have had several questions some from employees and some from the community and even customers. I thought I would post them in case anyone starting a program like we have will have a resource to come to.

Q: So we are coming back to work fulltime? What will we do if we don’t have any work or any community service to do?

A: I am not paying my people to do nothing. The object is to not use unemployment anymore and be of service to the community as a company. We are finding service projects, as a team, everyone is looking and contacting people. When we have work, either regular production or a service project they work. When we don’t they are off due to lack of work. I think we will get there this month.
