When speaking of type of work we have to stay within the guidelines our insurance providers set. Workman’s comp for example. We want to make sure no employee is doing something they are not physically able to do. Most of the time the agencies will help us with this but we will monitor it as well. I don’t think we will have anyone out cutting down trees for firewood. However, stacking it isn’t outside the job description of some of the employees here.
When speaking of who they can work for, I feel it should be for the benefit of the community however, this can be open to interpretation, so I told them to bring examples to me and we will decide. Working for the food bank is a no brainer “yes”. Working for another business in town for free most likely will be a “no”. Helping an individual that can’t do things around the home for some reason is a “yes” or maybe giving them a ride somewhere when they have no car or can’t drive would be a “yes”.
We want this program to be around for the long term. We have weekly meetings to make sure everything is going well and we are moving in the right direction. Sharing our experiences really keeps the excitment alive.
